Unemployment insurance and capital accumulation

چکیده
In this paper, I examine a model economy with production, search, and unemployment insurance. The introduction of capital into the economy of Wang and Williamson (2001) generates the result that optimal replacement ratios are always zero. The result arises from the decline in aggregate activity caused by unemployment insurance: both capital and labor inputs to production fall when benefits rise. Unlike most of the literature, I compute explicitly the cost of the transition path; agents are made better off by switching to a steady state with no unemployment insurance, but the welfare gain is approximately cut in half. Only the very poor and unemployed suffer welfare losses along the transition path. I then briefly investigate the implications of negative replacement ratios. JEL classification: E62, H21

Capital Accumulation and Unemployment in Namibia, Nigeria, and South Africa
The research investigates the causes of unemployment in Namibia, Nigeria and South Africa and the role of Capital Accumulation in reducing the unemployment profile of these economies as proposed by the post-Keynesian economics. This is conducted through extensive review of literature on the NAIRU models and focused on the post-Keynesian view of unemployment within the NAIRU framework. The NAIRU...

This paper argues that moderate unemployment insurance not only reduces the uncertainty faced by risk-averse workers but also improves efficiency and raises output. We develop a model in which the decentralized equilibrium is inefficient without unemployment insurance, because the labor market endogenously creates jobs that provide risk-averse workers with low unemployment risk and low wages. E...
متن کاملHeterogeneity, adverse selection and valuation with endogenous labor supply
This paper considers models of intratemporal consumption–labor choice and intertemporal consumption choice under heterogeneity and private information in preferences towards labor. We show that market regime regarding unemployment insurance is important to determine the effects of heterogeneity and private information on allocations and valuations. There are two main results. First, intertempor...
متن کاملDiscussion Papers in Economics Optimal Unemployment Insurance with Human Capital Depreciation and Duration Dependence
This paper studies the effect of human capital depreciation and duration dependence on the design of an optimal unemployment insurance (UI) scheme. Our results partially confirm those obtained in most previous studies: benefits should decrease with unemployment duration. The optimal program also generates two main novel features, which are not present in stationary models. First, if human capit...
متن کاملTrade , capital accumulation and structural unemployment : an empirical study of the Singapore economy ∗
This paper studies the factors responsible for the secular decline of Singapore’s unemployment rate over the period 1966-2000 in an environment of low and stable inflation rates. We introduce wage bargaining and unions into a specific-factors, two-sector economy with an export sector and a non-tradable sector to obtain an endogenous natural unemployment rate. Increases in the relative export pr...
